I’m very excited about my upcoming performance on Saturday, Feb 23rd at 8PM at the Firehouse Space with the wonderful bassist, Ken Filiano! For those of you who may not know Ken, he has performed with the leading creative music composer/performers/improvisers of out time…Anthony Braxton, Bill Dixon, John Carter, Vinny Golia, Jason Hwang, Dom Minasi, Taylor Ho Bynum,Richard Grossman, Connie Crothers, Paul Smoker, Roswell Rudd, Steve Adams..just to name a few…
I can’t remember when I first met Ken, I think it may have been through trumpeter Rob Henke, and saxophonist/composer/painter Walter Thompson. My first opportunity to hire him for a gig was in 2006, for a quintet concert at Caldwell College (Caldwell, NJ), also featuring Scott Neumann-drums, Ben Williams-trombone, Rob Middleton-tenor sax and our mutual and dearly departed friend/amazing vocalist and composer Tina Marsh. Since that time, Ken has come in to play with the big band and on several other quintet gigs, and another performance that we did with Tina, this time for her 7th Annual New Jazz Series “Off the Edge of the Page” (Austin,TX) June 2008, along side the fabulous musicians from her Creative Opportunity Orchestra. (L-R Ben, Tina, Scott,Rob,Me,Ken)
Ken has a new recording out, which you should definitely check out! It is called Ken Filiano and Quantum Entanglements: “Dreams From A Clown Car” on Clean Feed Records. Also on that recording, saxophonists Michael Attias and Tony Malaby along with drummer Michael T.A. Thompson.
Ken is married to the wonderful vocalist/lyricist/composer/writer Andrea Wolper. Andrea has a beautiful new cd out called “Parallel Lives” with Ken, Kris Davis-piano, Michael Howell-guitar and Michael T.A. Thompson-drums.
You can also catch Ken playing with violinist Jason Kao Hwang’s (DownBeat magazine’s 2012 Critic’s Poll award for “Rising Star” ) group “Edge”, which also features Andrew Drury on bass and Taylor Ho Bynum on cornet/flugelhorn.
…and so many others in the NYC area, and all over the world.
For this concert, we will be performing some of my birdsongs, Ken’s music and most definitely some beautiful moments of improvised music! It’s my first time performing at this space, and I hear the piano is great! Please come and enjoy an intimate evening of creative music in a beautiful space!
