Diane Moser’s Composers Big Band features Vocalist/Composer Sara McDonald

Sara McDonald is an award winning vocalist/composer/french hornist living in Brooklyn New York. While spending the majority of her life globe-trotting with her military family, Sara became heavily involved in the arts. Between piano and french horn lessons, she developed an interest in theater and singing. By the time she reached high school, Sara had already performed in over 30 musicals, and was the lead singer for her schools premiere jazz ensemble.

In the years that followed, Sara developed her musical skill set and went on to study at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music where she studied with the likes of Theo Bleckman, Peter Eldridge, Becca Stevens, Jane Ira Bloom and Ingrid Jensen. By the end of her senior year she was performing all around New York City with her own band and was gaining a lot of traction in the rock-pop/singer-songwriter scenes.

SaraMcDonaldTiny Big BandDuring the summer of 2013 alone, Sara performed in a slew of internationally acclaimed festivals including the Montreal Jazz Festival, Northside Festival and the East Village Music Festival. In the fall of 2013 Sara headed to Munich, Germany where she recorded her first Big Band Record with the All Jazz Orchestra. Since recording the album, she has gone back to play a tour with the orchestra and develop a strong relationship with the music community in Munich. You can listen to her recording on her bandcamp site.

In February of this year Sara won the prestigious ASCAP Herb Albert Young Jazz Composer Award and by June was invited into the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop. Sara has also performed live on Quebec Radio and was a featured artist on WNYC Soundcheck’s Gig Alerts. While she doesn’t necessarily label herself as a “jazz artist” she finds that her music treads on the fringes of indie pop, rock, and jazz; certainly a sound she has curated all on her own.
