On July 17th, 8PM at Trumpets Jazz Club in Montclair,NJ, we welcome Jazz and Brazilian Guitarist Billy Newman as our guest arranger with Diane Moser’s Composers Big Band.
Billy Newman is an exciting Jazz and Brazilian guitarist, who on this occasion, will be in the role of “arranger” as we do his chart on “Black Monday” by Andrew Hill. I met Billy during my residency at the MacDowell Colony in 2008, and we have been good friends ever since. As we did at MacDowell, when we would ask each other “how the work was going”, we still do that, giving lots of encouragement to each other, and occasionally get together to play. Billy has a very special take on Brazilian music, and has been leading two different groups for many years based on this music, “Brooklyn Brazilian Bop” and “Brazilian Acoustic Ensemble”. Recently he has put together some really great workshops on Brazilian music by bringing to NYC the renown Brazilian guitarist Rogerio Souza. Check out Billy’s music at http://www.billynewman.com/sounds.shtml
Also, in honor of the return of the cicadas, we will perform Mark Helias’s composition “Cicada”, and because it’s that time of year, my arrangement of the George Gershwin composition “Summertime”. You can expect a new chart from resident composer Rob Middleton, and your favorites from all of our resident composers as well.
See you in July at Trumpets!
